Brazilian jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

BJJ is a martial art with origins tracing back to the samurai warrior class of Japan. Instead of focusing on standing strikes, Jiu-jitsu aims to immobilize and neutralize opponents using grappling techniques and submission holds. A strict focus on technique and leverage over strength allows people of all sizes to learn and excel at this amazing art.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai, also referred to as Thai boxing, is a powerful striking based art from Thailand. This style of fighting is also known as the "art of eight limbs" due to it's combined use of fists, elbows, knees, and shins. Weekly training sessions include technical instruction and controlled sparring which are sure to give you an amazing cardiovascular workout.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bjj In Orlando

What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a Martial Art, developed by the Gracie Family in Brazil. The Gracies learned Jiu Jitsu from a Japanese Diplomat and evolved it into a whole new art which rather than focusing on powerful throws, the major strategy was to take attackers to the ground and pin them or apply joint locks or strangle holds to immobilize the opponent. Gracie/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has ben adopted by all branches of the armed forces as well as federal and local law enforcement agencies.

How is BJJ different than Karate and other Martial Arts?

Unlike Karate and other Martial Arts, the basic strategy is not to hurt or render your opponent unconscious but rather to neutralize, control and immobilize the attacker. Much like wrestling, the Jiu Jitsu fighter looks to take his opponents to the ground where he looks to outmaneuver and pin or immobilize.

I’m not in the best shape. Can I still take a BJJ Class?

It is not necessary to be in great shape to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our classes begin with a moderate warm-up and stretching to avoid injuries. Each member is encouraged to set their own pace. Getting in shape while learning a new skill is an added benefit of training jiu-jitsu.

I’ve never done martial arts before? Is there a beginner class?

Yes, all new students and inexperienced visitors start in the beginners class. This is where you will learn the basic concepts of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We also offer classes for children and advanced students.

Does GBNO offer private lessons?

Yes, some people prefer privacy or personal one-on-one attention. Our instructors are available for individual and semi private lessons.

I've been training at Gracie Barra North Orlando with my husband since Feb 2018. Starting jiujitsu here has been one of my best life decisions ever made. Aside from getting a great workout in, the community of amazing professors and other students is invaluable. Whether it is you've ever met them or not, students are always inviting and friendly. I've met my closest friends from training here. The professors are super passionate and are always willing to help when you ask questions after the class. It's such a welcoming community filled with positive vibes. Also, they have A/C - super important in Florida. :D Whether you want to be a weekend warrior or a competitive athlete, there is always a place for you here. I highly recommend this academy!

Great place to train! My jiu jitsu training began in 2006 and has taken me to several schools around the country. GB North Orlando is now my training home, and I love it. It more than delivers on what’s important to me:(1). Live To Train Another Day: none of the other stuff matters if you’re consistently getting injured and off the mat. The instructors at GB North Orlando have created a great team culture that folks of all ages and levels will enjoy.(2). Growth and Development: the training is top notch—I’m always getting better.(3). A Fun, Hard Workout: I never leave without a smile on my face and a few pounds of sweat in my gi (even though the school is air conditioned—a key advantage for a school in FL!).If you’re in Central FL and looking for a place to train, you should definitely check out GB North Orlando

Super proud to be affiliated with GB North Orlando. My two sons (ages 7 and 9) began their Jiu Jitsu journey a little over a year ago. Professor "Gutty" and Professor Lawrence, along with the rest of their team, do an absolutely incredible job with the kids program. It is a kind, loving, and fun, but disciplined environment... a perfect balance for establishing a foundation in this life-long endeavor. The adult program is also very well developed, where people of all levels are welcomed. Students and professors/coaches alike share openly their enthusiasm for training and growing together... built on mutual respect.Culture matters... and these guys walk the walk.

I met Professor Lawrence today and I was blown away by how welcoming and amazing he and the entire academy are. It was also really awesome as had a friend with me that had no impression of any martial arts and she was super excited as well. You will be hard pressed to find a better place never mind value for your money. The all inclusive atmosphere at the best price I’ve ever seen in my all years. I can’t wait to get started there and I’m blessed to be joining. Thank you Professor 🥋🙏🤝
