Orlando brazilian jiu-jitsu

Largely, a grappling and ground fighting art, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on the principles of leverage and technique to obtain dominant control of an opponent, and provides a greater position to resolve conflict by using submission holds. Student can train in BJJ for self defense, fitness, sport and mixed martial arts competition.

Jiu-Jitsu is more than a self defense system. We aim to teach our students not only to defend themselves from bullies but also to instill the key traits of a life time Martial Artist: honor, respect, humility, discipline, and perseverance. At Gracie Barra North Orlando BJJ we help children become the best they can be! We focus on creating a life-changing Kids Martial Arts program that will help our students overcome the many challenges life presents.

Unlike other martial arts which teach violent punches and kicks, our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program for children utilizes non-violent holds which are only used as a last option against a physically assaultive bully, while other programs may make children more aggressive, the Gracie Barra North Orlando Kids Jiu-Jitsu Program promotes non-violence through respect, discipline and compassion.

Coming into a martial arts academy can be intimidating for the beginning student. Our goal with the fundamentals class is to allow our students to learn jiu-jitsu by focusing on the controlled drilling of techniques without active sparring. The class also serves as a foundation for all students of BJJ, teaching the principles of the art and committing the core movements to muscle memory.

Our Fundamentals classes start with a structured warm-up, with the remaining portion of the class comprised of drilling self-defense or sport Jiu-Jitsu techniques then live position training to end the class. We educate our students how to have better control with their techniques, preparing them for live training. This class format has helped accelerate learning as well as prevent student injuries.

After completing the Fundamentals curriculum, students will have a basic understanding of offensive and defensive techniques utilized in jiu-jitsu. At this point students can continue their growth and development by entering the Advanced BJJ classes, taught by world champion Gustavo “Gutty” Muggiatti. These classes expand on the concepts and techniques introduced during the fundamental learning phase.

Our Advanced classes start with a short, structured warm-up and stretching, followed by a technical lesson and partner drilling. The remaining portion of the class is dedicated to instructor-supervised, live grappling.

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is fundamentally the same as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with the main difference being the lack of material to grip. The grips provided by the BJJ uniform allow for many judo-style throws, while no-gi takedowns resemble those of Olympic style wrestling. The difference in gripping also affects the application of submission techniques on the ground.

Where the BJJ ground game is methodical and technical, no-gi grappling moves tend to be more fluid and fast-paced. We have found that it is best for the student to know the basic fundamentals of Gi Jiu-Jitsu in order to properly excel in this class. Without the basic knowledge of Gi Jiu-Jitsu, it can create bad habits with your techniques; having the fundamentals engrained into your muscle memory allows this class to be even more beneficial.

Once students have a solid understanding of the techniques and principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and have graduated to the rank of Blue Belt with two stripes, they are able to join the BJJ Lab classes. These classes are held in the upstairs training area, on Monday and Wednesday nights at 6:00 pm.

Participating in BJJ Lab helps to reinforce technique, develop timing, and strengthen conditioning through rounds of live sparring. After class, students and instructors often dissect techniques and breakdown situations that occurred during live sparring.
